Joseph Francis Griffith(s) was born in Falcarragh, Co Donegal on 10 April 1892. He was one of 10 children of William, a farmer and Rose (m/s Cample/Campbell) who were married in 1865 in Co. Tyrone. In 1901, Joseph, his parents and the younger siblings were living in Carrowcannon, Co Donegal.

The family cannot be found on the 1911 Irish census, suggesting they had left Ireland before this date. A search of the 1911 Scottish census showed no records of Joseph living in Scotland. However, there is a James Griffith on the 1911 Inverkip census, living as a boarder with Patrick and Bridget McGechan at the post office building, Main Street. The record shows he was born in Ireland, was 25 in 1911 and working as a 'drainer'. Joseph did have a brother called James and the ages approximately match.

He enlisted for service in Greenock with the 5th Battalion Connaught Rangers.

He died from wounds in Palestine and is remembered in the Ramleh War Cemetery and on the Inverkip War Memorial. The Inverkip connection is unknown.
